President’s Message – Nov. 2015

President’s Message

(November 2015)

Due to the age and condition of our lawn tractor, the club has purchased a new zero turn Toro mower with a 60 inch deck. It even has a suspension seat for a more comfortable ride. This was very much appreciated by our lawn crew. The new machine has reduced the time mowing time substantially. We are going to keep the old tractor for various odd jobs.

The only approved targets on the pistol range are the club steel targets and paper targets. It has been discovered that golf balls were use as targets. They are not permissible along with cans, bottles, shot shells, plastic bottles, etc. Anyone caught using other than the above approved targets will lose their shooting privileges.

The handgun range pulley system to be used for paper targets is in the construction phase. The plan is to have it operational in the next two weeks.

Turkey Shoot – This shoot is for a $15.00 gift certificate for a turkey at Walmart. Participants will shoot 2 birds from each station on the trap field for a total of 10 birds. The high score from each five person squad will win a certificate. For skeet, 2 birds will be shot from stations 1,2,4,6,7 for a total of 10 birds. The high score from each five person squad will win a certificate. For 5 Stand, 2 birds will be shot from each station for a total of 10 birds. Again, the high score from each 5 person squad will win a certificate. The cost is $5.00 each time an event is shot. Lunch is included.

The remotes for the 5 stand are to be logged out. It appears that they are not always logged out. Also as a reminder, no personal remotes are to be use on the 5 stand venue. The reason for this is that if the club remotes are not used, we cannot determine how many rounds are shoot. This is an important metric for determining 5 stand usage.

The second annual Geezer Shoot was held on Saturday September 19. We had around 30 participants. The winners of each age group are posted at the club. The food was excellent. Thanks to Frank Halsey and his crew for put on this shoot. Well done guys.

The club’s annual Braggin Rights Shoot was held on Saturday October 17 and was also a success. First place winner was Bob Zeek, second place was Joe Vancura, and the third place winner was Greg Baylander. Thanks to Al Perry and his crew for running this shoot. Oh yeah, the food was also very good.

The club will be offering hats and shirts with the club logo for sales in the near future. Samples of the shirts will be hung in the club house along with a signup sheet. Prepayment for the shirts is required prior to the order being submitted to the vendor. As in the past, the hats will be stocked in the club house.

If anyone is interested in getting certified for the handgun range, please contact Milt Schwanke at 815-988-2278 for weekend morning classes and Don Lyddon at 815-877-0754 for weekday afternoon classes. You will need to bring a handgun, ammo, eye and ear protection, and a $25.00 annual fee.

2015 Club Projects

  • Construction of a 5 stand deck – approved and on hold
  • Cameras for 5 stand and the handgun range – in process
  • Pulley systems for the handgun range – in process

Best Regards,

Sam Valenza, President, Rockford Skeet Club

MEETING CALLED TO ORDER AT 9:00am BY PRESIDENT SAM VALENZA

This meeting was called to order to vote on the purchase of new 0 turn mower.  The meeting was prompted by the Lawn Crew (formerly known as Sycamore crew) who does the mowing, requesting a larger capacity mower for the property and the down time of the old mower due to maintenance issues.  Quotes on several mowers were received and evaluated. Input on mower type was received from the Lawn crew.  The board voted 6-0 to purchase Toro mower from Lincoln Rent All and Services.

  1. It was also agreed to fix the old mower for backup and smaller mowing use.
  2. In additional business, it was agreed to remove the Small Pepper Popper from use at the pistol range pending further safety review
  3. It was also agreed to move the date of the Braggin Rights shoot to 10-17 as most board members were unable to support 10-10 date.

President’s Message – Sept. 2015

President’s Message

(September 2015)

The Silver Dollar Registered Skeet Shoot was held on August 15 & 16. It was the best registered shoot we have had in several years with 25+  shooters, many were club members. The club made a net profit of $1100. Thanks to Dave and Beth Schroeder and their crew for coordinating this very successful event.

The meeting that was planned with the S&T for August 5 was re-scheduled to Monday September 14. The purpose of the meeting is to try to resolve differences between the two organizations. I’m hopeful this and any subsequent meetings will bring both groups closer together.

The second annual Geezer Shoot is Saturday September 19, 2015. The shoot will start at 10am and finish when done. The shoot consists of one round of skeet and two round of 5 stand. There will be three winners in each class (1st, 2nd, and 3rd). The age classes are 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75 and over. The cost is $15.00 and includes rounds, awards, and lunch. I hope to see you out there.

Also the annual “Braggin Rights Shoot” is Oct. 10, 2105. I will be sending out information on this shoot in the next week or two.

If you haven’t notice yet, the picnic table under the tree on skeet field 1 has been rebuilt. Thanks to Rich Tomasewski and LK Roney for taking the initiative to fund and build the table. It looks great.

Thanks to the generous donation of one of our club members, who wishes to remain anonymous, we will be installing four cameras on the pistol range. Two cameras will be inside of the range building, one will point down range, and one bullet camera will be mounted on the peak of the range building pointing down to the 5 stand venue.

The club will be hosting a steak lunch for our good neighbors over at the Land fill on Tuesday September 15. This is a token of our appreciation for all that they do for our club. Thanks to the good folks at the Landfill. BON APPETIT!!!

President’s Message – August 2015

President’s Message

(August 2015)

Congratulation to club member Ben Schroeder who recently competed in Sparta Il. at the Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) National tournament.  Ben, along with 5 others, shot 198 out of 200.  The ties were broken by reverse run and Ben earned a second place varsity medal.  There were hundreds of skeet competitors from 36 states. His three person squad from the Central Falcons also took home a second place trophy. The next week Ben won 12 gauge runner up at the Jr. World Skeet Tournament in San Antonio Tx. Ben along with 7 others shot 100s and the ties were decided by shoot off. Good job Ben.

The club will be hosting our Silver Dollar Registered Skeet Shoot on August 15 & 16, 2015. If you are interested in shooting in this event or would like to help out, please call Dave Schroeder at 815-988-7552. Saturday’s lunch is sponsored by Der Rathskeller with dessert provided by Blackhawk Propane. Thanks much to these two organizations for supporting this shoot.

A meeting has been set up on August 5 with a committee from the S&T BOD and the club BOD for the purpose of trying to resolve differences between the two organizations. I will keep you all informed as to any meaningful resolutions/discussions that come out of this meeting and any subsequent meetings.

The club parking lot will be seal coated in the next couple of week. The club will be closed on the day that it is done. I will send out an email to let you all know when this will happen.

As I keep promising, we will finally start the work to install a target pulley system on the handgun range. Plans have been finalized and we are just waiting for the construction committee to work out a schedule to begin work.

President’s Message – July 2015

President’s Message

(July 2015)

The Vintage shoot was held on June 20. The winners were Frank Halsey, high overall; Woody Woodruff, 1st place trap; Andrew Meier, 1st place 5 stand. Congratulations guys. I was told that the food was really good. Thanks to Frank Halsey and his crew for organizing this event.

The club submitted a formal offer to the President of the S&T BOD, Ed Clifford, to purchase the club land from the S&T Corporation on May 5. As of this date, we still have not had a response. It appears that the formal offer was not presented to the S&T BOD for consideration and for sure has not been presented to the stockholders for a vote. In my opinion, it would be common courtesy for the S&T to respond to the club’s offer. There was discussion about forming a committee from the S&T BOD and the club BOD for the purpose of holding meetings to workout possible resolutions. The Club BOD committee is willing to meet on any date that is agreeable to both parties. Hopefully this can happen it the very near future.

The club will be hosting our Silver Dollar Registered Skeet Shoot on August 15 & 16, 2015. If you are interested in shooting in this event or would like to help out, please call Dave Schroeder at 815-988-7552.

When making payments for rounds, please be sure the sum total is divisible by $3.50. If this is not done your rounds credit will be rounded down.

We again have club hats for sale. They are located in the glass case on the back wall of the club house. The price is $20.00. Put the money in an envelope and insert it in the deposit drawer.

Plans are in the works to have club breakfasts a couple times a month on a Saturday and/or Sunday morning starting sometime in October. If you are interested in helping out, please call Rich Tomasewski at 815-988-4898. More to follow as plans become firm.

The BOD has again agreed to donate $300.00 to the Boy Scout Shoot which will be held at the Upland Gun club on September 12, 2015
