VINTAGE SHOOT – June 18, 2016

This is a shoot where only vintage guns are used. It is only open to side by sidesand pre-World War II single barrel trap guns. 50 trap targets and 50 sporting clay targets will be shot. Lunch will be included. The cost of the shoot with lunch and awards is $20. The shoot will be shot between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm.

I want to thank Jaclyn Baylander for taking care of our memorial garden outside of the club house. She put in some new plants to replace some that died and did some weeding. It looks great.

Our annual spring cleanup was held on Saturday May 7. Thanks to all of the members that came out to make this day a success. The grounds and club house look terrific.

Trap field 1 is now operational and available for anyone wishing to shoot on that field. The machine has been refurbished and new parts are on order to replace some of the parts that are wearing. Thanks to Brain Anderson , Clay Buhler, and Frank Cicero for their hard work and expertise in tearing down all of the skeet machines and the trap machine to clean, lube, and repair/replace worn parts. President’s Message – May 2016

President’s Message

(May 2016)

Our annual spring cleanup date is at 8:30 am on Saturday May 7. Bring out your shovels, rakes, and trimmers. We will also need a wheel barrow or two as we will be getting a load of mulch to spread around the trees. No shooting will be allowed until all of the work is done. I hope to see you there. Lunch will be provided.

Thanks to Rich Tomasewski for installing new ceramic tiles on the bathrooms and kitchen floor. Also thank to Glenn Steward and LK Roney who did a lot of the prep work and assisted Rich during the installation. The floors look great!!!

On Monday May 9 at 7:30 am the club house carpet will be cleaned. The club will be open but I ask that traffic on the carpet be held to a minimum until it is completely dry. Thanks for your cooperation.

Judy Springer recently donated a picnic table, located on trap field 2, in memory of her late husband Carl who was a long time member. Judy remains a club member and plans to continue to shoot and to enjoy our club. On behalf of all the members of Rockford Skeet Club, I offer our condolences to Judy and her family. Thank you Judy for your generous donation.

I want remind everyone that shot larger than #8 is not permitted to be used on club property. Shot sizes of #71/2 or larger are prohibited.

I made an error when I announced the 2016 election winners. The Directors that were elected were Terry VanDenBoom, Harley Shepherd, and Clay Buhler. Randy Scott was not up for election and remains our Treasurer.

We had two instances of members inadvertently taking home skeet remotes. Please be sure that you check your pouches, shooting bags and trunks to be sure that a remote does not go home with you. Both remotes were returned promptly once the members were identified.

In the very near future, trap field 1 will be operational and available for anyone wishing to shoot on that field. We are in the process of making sure that all of the voice calls are working properly.

Club member Jerry Cello, who is an active police firearms instructor and the owner of Point of Impact Training, is offering a Tactical Handgun Level I training class on June 12, 2016. Instruction includes safety, fundamentals of marksmanship, critical troubleshooting, application of tactics to shooting, and combat marksmanship. The cost to members is $40.00 and nonmembers is $60.00. For more information and to register for the class go to http://www.poifirearms.com/ecommerce/ or call Jerry at (815) 322-6721.

When making a deposit for rounds only (not guest fees and guest rounds) it is not necessary to use an envelope. Simply write the number of rounds in the memo portion of your check and deposit it in the drawer. When paying by cash an envelope is to used.

If anyone is interested in getting certified for the handgun range, please contact Milt Schwanke at 815-988-2278 for weekend morning classes and Don Lyddon at 815-877-0754 for weekday afternoon classes. You will need to bring a handgun, ammo, eye and ear protection, and a $25.00 annual fee.

President’s Message – April 2016

President’s Message

(April 2016)

Our annual membership meeting was held on Saturday March 19 and the election results are as follows.

  • President – Sam Valenza
  • Secretary – Al Perry
  • Directors – Terry VanDenBoom, Randy Scott, Clay Buhler

Also at the annual meeting one of the questions that were raised was concerning leagues. The club has had a policy on league formation since 2009. The problem we have had and continue to have is finding members that are willing to organize and run the leagues. If anyone is willing to run a league for any of our venues (skeet, trap, 5 stand, handguns) please contact me or any BOD member.

Several of our members meet on Thursdays around 3:30 PM until dark for an evening of shooting fun. The shooting activities, depending on the night or mood of the members, could involve any of our shooting venues. If you are interested, come on out and join the fun.

The sale of reclaimed shot was held last Saturday; however, a few members that signed up were not able to purchase any shot as the supplier ran out of it. We do have a member that makes #8 shot and is offering it for sale at $30.00 per 25 pounds with a 50 pound minimum. If you are interested in purchasing this shot, please contact Ron Joseph at 847-669-0405.

One of our members, Jerry Cello, who is an active police firearms instructor and the owner of Point of Impact Training, offers a variety of handgun training classes.  They provide the necessary requirements for those who wish to obtain their concealed carry permits, as well as advanced concealed carry classes for those looking to truly understand the difficulties they may encounter in a potential deadly force situation in the real world. Jerry will be offering classes to our members and non-members. As classes are offered I will send out emails with all the details. The training will be done on the club’s handgun range, therefore, all members that plan on taking a class will have to be certified on our range prior to the class. A discount will be offered to all of our members. Also, if you would like more information regarding the classes, please send an email to poi@poifirearms.com or call (815) 322-6721.

President’s Message – March 2016

President’s Message

(March 2016)

Our annual membership meeting is scheduled for Saturday March 19 at 9 am at the club. We will be addressing club finances, shooting metrics, events and projects, election results, and taking questions from attendees.

I have good news. The Northern Illinois Rifle and Pistol Club (NIRPC) has purchased the Eckberg quarry totaling about 50 acres. I have been in discussions with the NIRPC for almost two years. Over the next several months our BOD will be holding meeting with the NIRPC to discuss such issues as purchasing the overshoot land by our club, best position for a 5 stand deck, mutual cooperation between the clubs, access road to the quarry, and anything else that can benefit both clubs. I will keep the membership informed when I have information that can be shared.

Our annual spring cleanup date is at 8:30 am on Saturday May 7. Bring out your shovels, rakes, and trimmers. No shooting will be allowed until all of the work is done. I hope to see you there. Lunch will be provided.

We have had an uptick in new members in the last first two months of this year with ten new members. It looks like we will set another record year for membership. We currently have 256 members and last years record was 268 members. If you have any friends, co-workers, and/or relatives that would be interested in joining the club, bring them out to get acquainted with the club and its members. WELCOME NEW MEMBERS.

The year-end 2015 financial statements and 2016 budget have been posted in the club house for all members to review.
